Quarantine 2

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends.

I was recently able to liberate a copy of Quarantine 2, and although I am sorry that some cops had to spend Christmas Eve drawing chaulk outlines on the floor of the local video store, I am glad to have finally watched it.

First off, I must admit that I am a fan of the first, and no, I have not seen the spanish counterpart of Quarantined named 'REC'.

Quarantine 2, directed and screenplay by John G. Pogue, was a great new chapter in the American version of the series. Taking place at the same time as the events in the first film, during the quarantine of the apartment building, part two involves the virus being taken onto a plane by infected lab rats that were stored in an animal crate.

This movie gets right to the point, and the action is fast, with well timed scares. I definatley jumped a couple times, and the movie was so well put together, that I am shocked it did not have a theatrical release.

Something else I really enjoyed about Quarantine 2, is how being trapped by quarantine measures in the terminal added a kind of claustrophobia to the movie, this worked really well for the first Night of the Living Dead, and few movies can actually pull that off in a manner as to affect the viewer properly.

Time for the G.R.E.A.T. score!

G-ore: Really nice, some of the sfx was top notch, and the infected makeup was handled well. 9

R-ealism: John G. Pogue encorporated post 9-11 security lockdown procedures, as well as an overblown govermental cdc response that caused more harm than good and created more unneeded victims of the virus. This is a perfect example of big goverment failure on a day to day basis, and reminds me of the TSA who have over blown security responses, threatening our liberties, and treating our grandparents like muslim suicide bombers by banning their dangerous cupcakes from traveling on airplanes. 9.5

E-ntertainment: I could not look away, the action and pace were so steady that I was afraid I would miss something. 8.5

A-cting: Not a single complaint, the actors were believable. 8.5

T-hrills: John G. Pogue's screenplay was able to throw in the scares when you least expected, adding to my enjoyment. 8.0

The total G.R.E.A.T. score is: 8.7 out of 10.

I highly recommend buying this from Amazon.com or renting it from your local store or online service.

So, will the goverment destroy the virus with their overblown response, or will it find a way out of the terminal?

You will have to watch Quarantine 2 to find out.

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

http://www.thewalkingdeadfanclub.com/apps/blog/

Christmas with the dead

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends!

Tis the season for giving, and I am giving a big thumbs up to Christmas With The Dead by Joe R. Lansdale.

This short story is perfect for being read aloud to lil kiddies in bed who are waiting for the jolly fat man to squeeze his butt done the chimney and give them presents. But dont expect them to have visions of sugar plumbs dancing in their heads, no no no. This story will give them unjolly nightmares ho ho ho.

Basically a man is spending Christmas alone, two years after the zombie apocalypse began, and he was forced to put down his wife and daughter like rabid dogs. Now his lonliness has gotten the best of him causing him to brave the streets and risk his flesh to get christmas supplies so he can have a hap-hap-happy holiday. A few near misses later and he is home with the supplies and a stray dog, and now must contend with the dead while hanging the lights for his festive celebration.

I loved this story, and will be making it a christmas tradition to read to my kids (or at least myself) ever jolly holiday from now on as my new twisted tradition.

Time for the G.R.E.A.T. score.

G-ore: nice and meaty, great descriptions of putrid faces and exploding heads. 10

R-ealism: some of the elements in the story convince me the author actually thought about survival in a zombie apocalypse. 9.0

E-ntertainment: Well, I loved it, it kept me interested, my wicked grinch smile spread from ear to ear, and my heart grew three sizes at the conclussion. 10

A-ction: Non stop, of course there was a lil backstory, but thats what made me root for the hero even more. I wanted to see him celebrate christmas after two years of isolation. 9.5

T-hrills: there were some great close calls and the pace remained steady. 9.0

The total G.R.E.A.T. score comes to 9.5 !

But wait there is more!

Joe R. Lansdale is turning this book into a movie. Now I already know that the movie is different from the story, but Joe R. Lansdale wrote Christmas with the Dead so well that I cant wait to see the movie, and I guarantee, that any future press releases will be posted here at www.thewalkingdeadfanclub.com.

So before I finish off my eggnog, let me pose this question: Will our hero get to light up his house for christmas eve, or will the damn zombies keep getting tangled in the lights and pulling them out? You will have to read CHRISTMAS WITH THE DEAD to find out.

Thanks for reading, and until my next review, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

http://www.thewalkingdeadfanclub.com/apps/blog

Silent Night, Zombie Night (or any other night of the year)

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends.

I was given an early stocking stuffer, for christmas, like 2 months early, and my words to the gift giver were..."ahh how rotten of ya, you shouldn't have", until I finished the movie and then I told them "you REALLY should not have!"

The movie I am refering too is SILENT NIGHT ZOMBIE NIGHT. This was put out like it was gonna be a great christmas zombie movie that you could add to your regular holiday movie collection every year. Those movies we just love to watch over and over, like A christmas Story, a Christmas Vacation, Elf, and Bad Santa.

This movie really had nothing to do with christmas though. Silent night Zombie night was filmed in Los Angeles and I am guessing it rarely looks like christmas there because of the climate...but if your gonna put out a christmas themed movie then you need to set it up like the way 90% of the rest of the nation experiences christmas. Cold weather, heavy coats, and snow. As opposed to t-shirts, palm trees and people saying the word christmas and throwing in a santa dressed fat zombie. Just cause you have a character say christmas does not make it a christmas themed movie, and just because you dressed up one of the yards with christmas lights does not make it feel like christmas.

So now that I am officially MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS, let me go into some other aspects of the film.

The makeup on the super zombies, (those who were smarter and more violent) sucked.

The script, sucked, because it had the most unlikely things happening, like the cop shot in the side of the head, waking up a few hours later with gauze over his temple, the weird rescue squad searching for more people, and if I say anymore I will groan like a zombie.

The camera work was pretty good though. Crisp clean footage! if the script and makeup had rocked this would have been watchable, more than once.

So now to my G.R.E.A.T. zombie movie score!

G-ore: was so so, and the effects BAH HUMBUG 5

R-ealism: No, the problems with the bad acting and bad script stuckout too much and would break the movie's flow. 5

E-ntertainment: No, towards the end I was looking at my watch waiting for the credits to roll. 4

A-cting: well, all actors and actress that are anygood have had one or two really bad rolls when they started, although the actors used all had faces that are forgettable in a crowd. 4

T-hrills: well, I was thrilled the movie was over, because i felt really let down after having such high hopes. 4

The total great score is 4.4

The good camera work was not enough to save this movie in my opinion.

If you are a glutten for boredom then you can pick up this film from Amazon.com

So tell me, if you were shot in the side of the head during a zombie pandemic would you even need pain relievers for the headache? You will have to watch Silent Night Zombie Night to find out.

Thanks for reading, and untill my next review, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

http://www.thewalkingdeadfanclub.com/apps/blog/

THE DEAD

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends!

My rotting dust scratched eyes were able to lock them selves on a prey I have waited for two years to see. The DEAD directed by the Ford brothers.

I sat inraptured, allowing my eyes to feast upon the visuals of this beautifully made movie. After all the zom "B" movies I have seen over the last year, The DEAD was a much needed change of pace to see such a professional piece of filmography.

Based in Africa, this is the story of the lone survivor of the last flight out of the zombie infested continent. Crashing off the coast because there was not enough time to finish prepping the plane before the airstrip was completely over run. The lone survivor makes his way across the parched and barren landscape, meeting up with another survivor who is looking for his son, trying to stay alive, while searching for a safe haven.

Everytime they have to stop for repairs, or water, or rest, the dead are always steadily approaching, hardly giving them time to catch their breath.

Time for the G.R.E.A.T. zombie movie score!

G-ore: the makeup was amazing, the gore was fantastic, the flesh eating and ripping rocked, and the way the broken leg of the zombie in the very beginning was cracking and popping as he walked was proof of attention to detail...10

R-ealism: very realistic, there was no discussion of the start and casue of the plague so there was just the element of survival, something people would have to face in the event of economic and societal collapse. 8.0

E-ntertainment: this movie left me spell bound, the attention to detail, the story, the landscapes, the background music, all combined to leave me in a trance, unable to look away. 9.0

A-cting: was awesome, the contrasts between the too main characters, and the circumstances that brought them together kept the movie flowing forward. 8.0

T-hrills: YES YES YES, even when you knew the scene was setting up for a scare, the scare still got ya, the ford brothers know how to direct and I hope to see a future zombie movie from them one day. 9.0

The overall combined G.R.E.A.T. Score averages out to 8.8 out of 10 possible, and The Dead totally deserves it!

I look forward to watching this movie many more times in the future!

But here is my parting question, will the rest of the world survive a quarantined zombie africa, or will the plague spread beyond the dark continent?

You will have to watch THE DEAD to find out.

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

The Zombie Autopsies

Greeting my shambling shuffling friends.

I had to break into the United nations and steal a secret notebook from the World Health Organization in order to give you this next review.

That notebook is called The Zombie Autopsies, written by Steven C. Schlozman, illustrated by Andrea Sparacio and brought to us by Grand Central Publishing.

Steven C. Schlozman has done alot of painstaking research to bring this book to us, and that research is very intelligent. Covering the autopsies of rotting shamblers, he has introduced us to the anatomy and effects on organs that the virus(es) have upon the body and the progression of the infected from simple flu like symptoms to rotting hungry worm buffets. The medical descriptions were spot on, as well as the medical terminology.

The illustrations by Andrea Sparacio were beautiful, professional and deserving of a place in Gray's Anatomy.

The story is in the format of a medical journal written to help solve the impending destruction of all man kind by an airborne and bite spread pathogen that is turning the world to zombies. The medical staff are all infected and are racing against the clock before their research comes to an end and their hunger becomes unending.

I do like The Zombie Autopsies and will be proud to have it on my book shelf next to World War Z, the Day by Day Armeggedon series, and The Morning Star Strain series.

But this book was missing something, and that was the emotional human element. It is written from the point of view of a scientist, amongst other scientists, who are consumed by their research. No emotional ties or big heartbreaks, no emergency situations that had me turning the pages to see what happened next. I enjoyed the realism, but I could have been reading a technical manual in medical school. I did not feel for the characters as they succumbed to the virus(es), nor did I mourn their conversions. In fact I was happy at their zombification because I wanted them to wreak havoc, and pick up the pace of the story.

But the medical descriptions and the anatomical illustrations were superb, and I found myself flipping back through the book after finishing it to look at the drawings again.
This book can be put up there on your bookshelf next to other greats and admired even if it is more of a medical journal and less of a story.

So let me ask, will the scientists make a last minute break through that could lead to a vaccine and save the world, or will they and their remaining test subjects become nothing but crab buffet?

You will have to read The Zombie Autopsies to find out.

You can find The Zombie Autopsies at Amazon.com.

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
www.thewalkingdeadfanclub.com/apps/blog/

jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

His drawings remind me of a mix of cartooning and caricatures, and as a result Mr. Fingerman is able to use those cartooning exagerations to bring out and portray stereotypes really well, not to mention drawing some kick butt gorey zombies.

The story starts at a local school with a science professor and some geeks working on a science project. Through their bumblings they release a noxious purple gas that floats through the halls infecting all who have gone through puberty, turning them into flesh hungry zombies.

A group of pre-puberty tykes are forced to band together to fight their way to safety through their ever more dangerous school halls, which is kinda difficult being that the doors were chained shut on the inside by the principal in an attempt to keep kids from cutting class, which is also in violation of fire codes.

These kids put up a helluva fight as they try to stay alive, and you will love watching the stereotypes succumb to the jaws of the undead.

I recommend you introduce yourself to the works of Bob Fingerman, he is definatley an author who is gonna make his mark on the literary world.

So let me ask you, if you were with a group of kids trapped in a school with zombies and the doors were chained, how would you escape?

You will have to read RECESS PEICES by BOB FINGERMAN to find out.

RECESS PEICES is available through www.amazon.com

Thanks for reading, and until my next review, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

Day By Day Armegeddon by J.L. Bourne

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends!

I have finished reading a zombie novel that digs deep into the mind of a militarily trained survivor.

Day By Day Armegeddon, by J.L. Bourne.

This book was designed to read like a survivors journal, which added a strong sense of realism to the story structure. The sound survival techniques kept the story grounded in reality, and even gave me some practical ideas in the event I must one day face the zombie apocalypse. The realism is helped by the fact that J.L. Bourne is in fact a Naval Officer, so he knew what he was talking about when he wrote it.

The book starts with the main character deciding to keep a journal as part of his new years resolution, making comments as a viral crisis begins to escalate in china, he details the spread of the infection as it begins to threaten America's cities, and quickly turns to a survival mode to ensure he survives.

After organizing with a neighbor and avoiding a few close calls, the have to flee the city before it is nuked to reduce the zombie numbers in the United States. This is where the adventure begins.

Throughout the story the numbers of survivors in his group continue to grow, and they learn new ways to deal with the dead, like using sound to heard them away from their areas, and utilizing boats for safety and living quarters.

Eventually their safe haven at the floating arena begins to sink from years of neglect by the previous now dead owner, and they are forced back onland where they must carefully find their way to a suitable safe haven.

J.L. Bourne wrote a novel that zombie purists could love, and kept with the traditional zombie rules. I found myself taking this book with me everywhere, just so I could read a few more pages whenever the opportunity presented itself.

All fans of zombie novels will do a good deed to their collection to add this title.

You can find Day by Day Armegeddon by J.L. Bourne at Amazon.com or through the authors website www.jlbourne.com.

Before I end this review, I do have a question for my readers.

In the event of a zombie apocalypse, will there be any military facilities left still defensible against the living and the undead?

You will have to read Day By Day Armegeddon to find out.

Thanks for reading, and until my next review, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

Siege of the Dead, aka Rammbock

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends.

I just finished watching the German answer to zombie movies named Rammbock, aka Seige of the Dead, aka Rammbock: Berlin Undead.

-

Siege of the Dead was directed by Marvin Kren, and written by Benjamin Hessler, starring Sebastian Achilles, Ingrid Beerbaum and Carsten Behrendt.

Let me start by saying, that having dead, or undead in the name is not correct, these are infected people, not zombies, zombies are people who became infected, died and reanimated, in Siege of the Dead, they become infected, get upset, and adrenalin tiggers the crazed reaction, resulting in rabid, mouth foaming, running, strong, agressive, infected.

With that out of the way, I can say that this is a really good movie. Siege of the Dead, had a good storyline, a good plot, and was able to add a new twist to the ever growing genre of zombie movies. The market has been flooded as of late with too many zom"B" movies, and I was tickled to my rotten funny bone to be able to watch this first class movie.

The movie begins with Michael visiting his ex-girlfriend to return her keys, when at that moment the infection begins trapping him and another guy in her apartment. Everyone else who are trapped in there apartments in the same building, can only communicate by shouting at each other from their windows across a courtyard, which keeps reattracting the infected everytime things calm down. Michael escapes the apartment through a hole in the wall, and barely makes it to the building attic, when Michael stumbles upon his ex-girlfriend and the man she cheated on him with in hiding. The guy is a real prick and forces Michael onto the roof, where he takes the time to start helping other people in the complex.

Michael and company soon discover a novel way to chase away the infected safely, and are able to close the courtyard doors, giving them time to plan an escape to the harbor where boats are awaiting any survivors.

I can't say much more without giving away all the good points so it is time to give Siege of the Dead a G.R.E.A.T. Score.

-

G-ore: While there were no gut spilling scenes, the make up jobs on the infected were fantastic, 7.0

R-ealism: The way people were dealing with the situation they were handed was believable, the characters seemed like real people you could meet anywhere and they handled themseleves accordingly, 8.5

E-ntertainment: This movie had my attention the whole time, no boring parts, and is very well written, 9.0

A-ction: Normally I would list this as acting, but I covered that in realism, so I am going with action, lots of action, with great little twists thrown in, 8.75

T-hrills: as they venture through the building, I could sense the excitment building in myself, while the main characters were trying to avoid the infected, 9.0

-

This great score averages out to 8.45! That is a fairly good score, and one of the best I have given.

Remember you can find this movie on Amazon.com, and I highly recommend adding this to your zombie movie collection.

But before I go, I would like to pose a question to you:

Would your love for your ex be strong enough to make you forget they cheated and make you want to be with them till the very end during an apocalyptic situation?

You will have to watch Siege of the Dead to find out.

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com
http://www.thewalkingdeadfanclub.com/apps/blog/

THE LIVING DEAD, Edited by John Joseph Adams

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends!

I just finished letting my rotted fingers turn the pages of the best zombie anthology ever.

If I was told to think of one word to sum up all the greatness that is this anthology, that one word would be PERFECTION, and yet, that might not give it justice.

THE LIVING DEAD, Edited by John Joseph Adams, is bursting at it binding with 34 wonderful zombie stories from the best horror authors in the world. Stephen King, Clive Barker, Laurell K. Hamilton, Neil Gaiman, and too many more to mention, so I am gonna touch on a few of my favorites in this anthology.

-This Year's Class Picture, by Dan Simmons, is proof you can teach an old dog, or in this case rotting zombie kids, new tricks, just keep feeding them special nuggets. Very touching.

-Ghost Dance, by Sherman Alexie, great gorey goodness, a cop has his balls and cock fed to a zombie horse, an awesome read.

-Malthusian's Zombie, by Jeffrey Ford, this involves a brain washed zombie, but the intellect behind the story structure and it's outcome was pure genius, I had to think about this story for two days after reading it, before I could move on to the next.

-Beautiful Stuff, by Susan Palwick, will make you forget politics, hate, and revenge, and instead focus on the beautiful things in life, like a butterfly, or a flower, or pretty song bird. This story echoes truth.

-Stockholm Syndrome, by David Tellerman, portrays the depression and loneliness of a man barricaded by himself in his house, watching while the dead across the street find their way into another house of people, and consume them, you can feel the hoplessness of the moment in this story.

-Bobby Conroy Comes Back From The Dead, by Joe Hill, This was my favorite story from THE LIVING DEAD, and did not have any zombies, instead this was a short story about a man trying to rekindle an old romance while playing a zombie extra on the film set at the mall while George Romero was shooting DAWN OF THE DEAD, and I was absolutley jealous that these fictional characters where able to be zombie extras in a land mark film, even though this was pure fiction.

-In Beauty, Like The Night, by Norman Partridge, you have zombies who believe the are still human and living, right up to the moment they have food within striking distance, then they lose the last of there humanity to become hungry cadavers. I enjoyed this because losing your humanity is very important, and is a reoccuring theme in zombie novels usually about the living not losing their humanity, but this time it was about zombies losing their humanity, and not wanting too.

-Everything is better with Zombies, by Hannah Wolf Bowen, these kids have an amazing imagination, and remind me of my kids who tend to play zombie with thier friends, another great zombie story without zombies, and reaffirms that you never have friends or imaginations like those you had before you hit puberty.

-Sparks Fly Upwards, by Lisa Morton, Powerful subject matter dealing with surviving the zombie apocalypse and the topic of abortion. Sparks fly upward is emotional genius.

-Deadman's Road, by Joe R. Lansdale, a western zombie story, with a caustic preacher that I really liked, and I hope to see more zombie stories involving this preacher gunman.

-The Skull Faced Boy, by David Barr Kirtley, some zombies remain intelligent, while others become mindless idiots, so the smart ones begin to organize the dummies to help keep from being killed by humans, and instead return the favor, this story even has betrayal of the ones you love.

-The Age of Sorrow, by Nancy Kilpatrick, a woman, totally alone, who has no one to talk to and no physical contact, faces the grief of loneliness, and finds solace in the cold hands that caress her warm skin through the chain link fence. Makes you appreciate how much we truly need physical human contact.

-Dead Like Me, by Adam-Troy Castro, complete realism as you try to survive and fake being dead for another day of life, a must read.

These were just some of my favorites, but remember this book has 34 stories and I guarantee all zombie fans will find something they like in THE LIVING DEAD.

If you would want to know more about this wonderful anthology then you have got to visit THE LIVING DEAD's web page, where you will find excerpts of stories, interviews with the authors, free fiction and a link to buy this truly epic collection of zombie fiction.

The Living Dead:
http://www.johnjosephadams.com/the-living-dead/

John Joseph Adams did a wonderful job editing this book, and is also involved with two online magazines, Fantasy (www.fantasy-magazine.com) and Lightspeed (www.lightspeedmagazine.com).

Both of these online magazines will have a zombie story in the coming issues. In June, Fantasy is publishing "You Have Been Turned Into a Zombie by a Friend" by Jeremiah Tolbert, and in May, Lightspeed is publishing "The Harrowers" by Eric Gregory.

Go to these magazine sites to learn more about these short stories and make sure to pick up a copy of THE LIVING DEAD right away!

You can not be a true zombie fan without this collection on your bookshelf!

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

NOTLD: reanimated (and really hard to watch)

Greetings my shambling shuffling friend!

A couple days ago I got my rotten cold fingers wrapped around a copy of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED (not to be confused with the upcoming Notld 3D: reanimated)

NOTLD: REANIMATED Directed by Mike Schneider, is a collaboration from over 100 cartoonist from around the globe each animating George Romero's classic, with everything from claymation, cgi and hand drawn cartooning, to puppetry and acrylics, then spliced all of these animation genre's together to create one movie.

I really wanted to like this movie, the concept is great, but it was too much.

I patiently sat like one of the dead and watched this film from beginning to end, and I liked some of the animation styles. But had I not seen this movie in it's original form about 20 times in my life, I would have been at a loss as to what was happening, my only guide being the familiar voices in the background dubbed over the animations.

Some of the animations were so abstract that they made no sense, and in truth looked on par to what you would expect of cartooning beginners.

I believe they should have not used the work of over 100 cartoonists, and instead used the best 4 or 5. They crammed in so much that the images were constantly changing and I felt like an epileptic having a seizure. This resulted in a very unsteady movie, that kids could not sit through with their short attention spans, (the changing styles would have overwhelmed their poor lil brains).

Some of the cartoonists actually did excellent work though, and I believe these were show cased during the trailer. My favorite artist actually drew the scene of the bodies being devoured in the burned out truck, the goriness of the zombies were superb!

So how would I rate this movie?

G.R.E.A.T. scale
G-ore: I can't give this more than a 5, because some of the cartooning was just to avant garde.
R-ealism: it was a cartoon, and although the story in it's self is realistic the changing of the cartooning styles wrecked it. 4
E-ntertainment: I felt like the monkey at the beginning of 28 Days later, forced to watch the multiple t.v. screens, had I been on a hallucenagenic drug it would have resulted in a horribly bad trip. 3
A-cting: the original soundtrack and actors voices were great, but the cartooning was to far out there. 3.5
T-hrills: it was a thrill for the credits to roll, so the seizures would stop. 2

The combined G.R.E.A.T. score is 3.5

I dont really recommend this movie, but if you love to add to your collection like I do, you can find this movie at Amazon.com

So how badly do you want to have a flickering t.v. induced siezure?

You will have to watch NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED to find out.

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

Brain Dead (2007)

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends.

I just finished watching one helluva cool zombie movie.

BRAIN DEAD (2007)

A KEVIN TENNEY film, starring JOSHUA BENTON, SARAH GRANT BRENDECKE, DAVID CRANE, ANDY FORREST and ALEXANDRA GOODMAN.

Brought to us by Vicious Circle Films, and Breaking Glass Pictures.

An asteroid flies through space carrying a goo that looks like the blob, and after entering earths atmosphere, strikes a fisherman in the head, where the goo then takes over, turning the man into an alien amoeba parasite infected zombie.

Shortly there after two escaped convicts, two lost hiker babes, and a bumbling horny preacher and his hot church helper all cross paths at a cabin in the woods trying to seek shelter from their various predicaments, only to realize that they all have to unite to fight the zombie menace that surrounds them in the woods.

This movie was full of some of the best SFX and gore scenes since Peter Jackson's Dead Alive and the more recent foriegn zombedy Dead Snow, and these zombies we also strictly brain eaters which I have not seen since The Return of the Living Dead movie franchise

The first quarter of BRAIN DEAD was also full of hot naked babes, only Zombie Strippers with Jenna Jameson had more naked bodies.

Being a cultish zombedy, I also found myself able to jump from fright twice which really impressed me.

So let us see what the G.R.E.A.T. zombie score for BRAIN DEAD will be.

G-ore: Lots of it done really well, if the zombie makeup had been better I might have given this movie a 9.5, but I must yield to a lower 8.5

R-ealism: Any zombie movie that shows the origin of the zombie plague can tend to suffer from reducing the realism, although Resident Evil, 28 days later, and Return of the Living Dead did not suffer this draw back. The origins were important for BRAIN DEAD's storyline, but is not meant to be taken seriously. 5.95

E-ntertainment: BRAIN DEAD was packed full of entertainment, from the naked women, the dialog, some of the gross out gags, and the gore. I actually saw some sfx I have never seen in a zombie movie before. 8.75

A-cting: Some of the acting was pretty good, some was over acted like they were trying too hard to project their stereotype for the camera. 6.0

T-hrills: Yes there were thrills, I did jump twice, some of the gore excited me, lots of naked HOT babes which was exciting, BRAIN DEAD kept me watching. 6.5

The combined G.R.E.A.T. zombie score comes to an average of 7.14!

You can find BRAIN DEAD (2007) on Amazon.com.

Before I wrap this review, I have a question for you.

How did the trojan amoeba slime slug sneak into the cabin with Amy, and had she lived would it have scarred her for life?

You will have to watch BRAIN DEAD to answer that question.

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things

Greeting my shambling shuffling friends!

I have been doin alot of reading lately that GEORGE ROMERO, the godfather of the Dead, and master of zombie movies, has agreed to direct the remake of the original 1972 film CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS. Believe it or not this film made it into my collection years ago, and somehow I let it slip through the cracks and never watched it.

Directed by BOB CLARK (best known for his 1982 christmas holiday epic A CHRISTMAS STORY) this movie was filmed over 14 days with a 70,000 dollar budget, yet still looked incredibly good with the production values, acting, and fx courtesy of TOM SAVINI, (of course $70,000 then would be like $400,000 now, which is more than most indie zom"B" films are budgeted with). ALAN ORMSBY played the role of a power hunger ego tripping theater troupe director, who constantly threatened the other characters with losing their theater contracts if they dont go along with the fun. Alan's character also named Alan, was very annoying, I really ended up disliking him, he was such a chicken that he threw another character to the zombies to help himself escape, like a real coward, so I was delighted to watch him get eaten buy a zombie. Another actor called Jeff, in real life was named JEFF GILLEN, later became the Santa Clause that told Ralphie he would shoot his eye out if he got a red ryder bb gun, and then used his boot to shove poor Ralphie down the christmas slide in BOB CLARKS masterpeice A CHRISTMAS STORY.

CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS is a classic zombie movie, although what differs is the use of satanic spells from an ancient book to raise the dead which drives down the reality factor, but is still cool none the less, everyone dies at the end, and the final shots of the film show the zombies boarding their boat with city lights in the distance.

Let's see how this will rate with the G.R.E.A.T. zombie movie grading scale.

G-ore: The makeup was not bad for the time period, and there was some decent gore, although nothing over the top. 6.0

R-ealism: There are no magic spells that will bring the dead back to life, but aside from that the good acting added a touch of realism 4.5

E-ntertainment: Aside from the magic spells, this movie pretty much stuck to the zombie rules, and used good suspence to keep me interested, although the first half of the film was rather zombie free 6.5

A-cting: The acting was great, Alan was annoying, but we were meant to not like him, also the fear reactions in the others characters faces was fantastic 8.0

T-hrills: Nothing made me jump out of my seat and scream like a little girl, but the zombies ambushing the people after they thought they had gone back to the graveyard was pretty good, and the genuine looks of fear in the actors faces kept me excited. 6.5

The combined G.R.E.A.T. score averages 6.3

This movie is about to be REMADE thanks to Fangoria Entertainment’s start-up Gravesend Film Enterprises and production company Accelerator, and I am excited that GEORGE ROMERO was tapped to direct.

Fangoria Entertainment president Thomas DeFeo said: “I’m very excited... I’m a big Bob Clark fan, and that’s why we chose to remake this movie. There are going to be a lot of zombies, a lot of good stuff, and we’re assembling a wonderful production team—the best—and also a great cast. This is going to be the start of many more great horror movies—originals and remakes."

You can find CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS on amazon.com

My closing question for you is:

Jeffie pee's his pants when he gets scared during a cemetary scene, but will he be man enough to admit to it?

You will have to watch CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS to find out.

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes

jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

ZOMBIE WOMEN OF SATAN !!!!!!

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends!

This movie is a like it or hate it movie, and because I enjoyed seeing things I have never seen in another zombie film, that made me LIKE IT.

I am talking about ZOMBIE WOMEN OF SATAN (with a name like that I had to watch it). Directed by Steve O'Brien and Warren Speed (Europe's leading male burlesque performer), courtesy of Growling Clown Entertainment, and 24:25 films. Starring Johnny Hellfire (Seymour Leon Mace), Pervo the Clown (Warren Speed), Zeus the midget strongman (Peter Bonner) and Skye Brannigan (Victoria Hopkins). .

The story starts with a burlesque show, and continues into the night with raunchy sex with fans, that involves naked women in gas masks, and Pervo needing rainboots while doing his thing with 6 women.

The next day they go to a studio to tape an interview with the villan Tycho Zander (Christian Steel) which is on private property that also is a secret cult compound doing drug experiments on all the scantily clad hotties in red wigs wearing white garters and bras. (far fetched but great visuals!)

During the taping the scantily clad babes drink some chemical laced kool-aid, and start tearing their bras off and bleeding from the eyes, mouths, nipples and vaginas. (The tag line "It Really Was the Wrong Time of the Month" is not just a nifty catch phrase), so now there are dozens of topless bleeding zombie babes facing off against the motley crew of a burlesque troop.

This film is full of countless gags and jokes thrown in at the right time, like playing with vicious zombie babe boobs, masturbation, butt cheek nipple tassels, bi-curious jokes, gorey gags, and zombie rape.

But some of the movie kind of threw me off, like the horny whore mother, who was chained in the basement, and enjoyed watching a video of her son having sex with a zombie (zombie rape).

With this review I am gonna introduce my G.R.E.A.T. zombie movie grading scale.

G-ore: Some good gorey scenes, including a chainsaw accident,....6.50

R-ealism: super far fetched although I smiled most way through the film...3.50

E-ntertainment: I was not bored, made me laughed out loud, lots of titties...7.0

A-cting: some was better than others...6.50

T-hrills: I did not get scared or jump any, but did get excited from the titties....6.0

The combined G.R.E.A.T. score averages out to a 5.90 out of 10.Which is standard fair for a decent indie flick, especially one filmed and put together in a 6 month period.

I would definatley watch this movie twice, even if it was just to see all the running bloody boobies again.

You can rent this movie at your local video rental, or buy it from Amazon.com.

Before I finish this review, I want to pose a couple of questions for you.

How much poo, can a midget poo, if a midget poo's in the woods?

or

If a midget poops in the woods and there is no one living around, does it still smell?

You will have to watch ZOMBIE WOMEN OF SATAN to find out.

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes

jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

Innocence DEFILED

?

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends!

I am totally impressed with a new movie I reviewed from Chemical Burn Entertaiment, that movie is THE DEFILED.

?

Written and Directed by JULIAN GRANT, Starring Brian Shaw, Alden Moore, Graham Jenkins and Kathleen Lawlor, THE DEFILED is 100 minutes, and is so artistically thought provoking that I had to think about the movie for a full 24 hours before attempting this review, otherwise I would have gushed about THE DEFILED like a shy zombie fanboy. There is no talking, just grunts and baby crying throughout the film, but JULIAN GRANT was able through the visuals in this movie, to convey the story clearly with no confusion.

A virus has caused a large percentage of people to become cannibal flesh eaters, they look like zombies, have superficial wounds, and dark eyes, reminiscent of some of the zombies in the original night of the living dead, but the infected are still capable of illness and being killed by conventional means. They can even breed and have infected children, which is exactly what THE DEFILED revolves around.

An infected expectant mother and her clan eat bad meat from a dead guy, and consequently die, but the father of the baby lives because he did not consume that flesh. Upon everyone elses deaths, he has to use a meat hook to cut his way into his girlfriends belly, to help his baby live. Now wandering around with his baby, avoiding mutant forest animals, and other infected, he eventually saves a regular woman from certain consumption and she in turn helps him with his baby. Together they set off, him fighting his cannibalistic urges against the normal woman for the sake of his baby, and her, caring for a baby that has a father who is not sure what to do.

?

Will normal people be able to care for an infected baby, will the baby and it's father survive, or are we all just meat?

?

You must watch THE DEFILED to find out.

?

I absolutely LOVED this movie, and recommend all zombie fans watch THE DEFILED, and add it to their video library.

THE DEFILED is fresh and original, and JULIAN GRANT is definatley a writer and director who I am gonna pay attention too.

?

You can find THE DEFILED at amazon.com

?

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes

jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

Melvin ... A Henry Weintraub film

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends.

This morning I had the chance to review Melvin, the award winning 2009 zombie film, distributed by Chemical Burn Entertainment.

At first I was a bit hesitant, because I have seen some really bad low budget films in the past (zombie clowns comes to mind), but Melvin is a different breed altogether. This movie is campy in a GOOD low budget kinda way. Yes I said campy, low budget, and good in the same sentence.

There are some great gorey FX scenes, like a cemetary decapitation, and the actors are pretty good, along with a GREAT full frontal nudity scene. (giggity giggity goo!) I will admit I did get a little confused at first while watching the first half of the movie, I thought the same guys were harassing a geeky high schooler and a geeky college guy, but I figured out the high school kid's harrasment was a series of flahsbacks.(I can be slow sometimes.)

Melvin is the story about a dead geek, infecting a live geek, to get even with their high school and college tormentors.

Will the bullies get what they deserve?

Will the zombies get their.... ah hem....just dessert?

How many times will you rewind the full frontal nudity scene, just like I did?

You will have to watch Melvin to find out.

Melvin brought a smile to my face more than once, and will hold a spot in my zombie movie collection, now nearing the 75 mark. I cant wait to see what Henry Weintraub can do with a bigger budget, because Melvin was worth the time it took to watch it.

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

ZZZZOMBIES.... short film

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends!

I was playing on the internet again when I should have been finishing up some yard work, (those mass graves wont dig themselves). When I stumbled upon a short film, like less than 4 minutes, called ZZZZOMBIES animated by David King in Scotland.

This short film left me smiling and amazed. David King filmed this movie using stop motion, with cut out paper peices....on an overhead projector! So simple, yet so ARTISTIC.

I truly hope David King has more zombie goodness up his sleeve, because with the skills and vision he show cases in this short, it would be a waste of talent not to do more.

Here is the link to ZZZZOMBIES, be sure to let me know what you think.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M8vIB8wMVg

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes

jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

The Zombies of Lake Woebegotten

Greetings my shambling shuffling friends!

Have you ever read a good book about a close knit community of decent people, one of those stories that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, with zombies? It sounds like a difficult combination but it works out great in:

THE ZOMBIES OF LAKE WOEBEGOTTEN, by Harrison Geillor and Night Shade Books, www.nightshadebooks.com.

If the town of Mayberry from the Andy Griffith Show was a real place, and became the setting for George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, the THE ZOMBIES OF LAKE WOEBEGOTTEN would be the result. Author Harrison Geillor has written a special zombie story, extra gorey in a Mayberry kinda way.

The novel starts with an ice fisherman awaking in the middle of the night with the urge to relieve his plumbing. Stepping out of his ice fishing shack and relieving himself he notices a meteorite streaking overhead and then exploding into twinkling cosmic dust high in the atmosphere. Upon re-entering his ice fishing shack, the dead fish in his cooler begin flopping about and falling to the ground around the cooler. The poor guy cuts off their lil fishy heads but the heads keep moving, so he has to throw them down the fishing hole in the ice.

The next day at the grocery store, the owner and his employee encounter the badly injured lil dog of old man Levitt, ( well only after the grocery store owner has sex with a local woman, who has a husband that wont have sex with her, and she assumes that it is because he is seeing another woman, but is really sexually aroused by his sports car....yeah that fetish!)

The lil dog of old man Levitt has his hind legs all twisted around like he has been hit by a car, and wont stop snapping at peoples ankles. So they capture it and try to return the lil ankle biter to old man Levitt.

Upon pulling up to the house of old man Levitt, they hear a chainsaw, and go busting through the front door to find.....

Mr. LEVITT

Old man Levitt is just shy of 80 years old and is in the process of chainsawing a zombies head off. Three more stumble into the living room from the kitchen behind him, he turns, and very nimbly for a man his age, chainsaws another zombie cutting off both arms at the elbow before sawing out its legs from under it.

Mr. Levitt is having a zombie problem on account of all the bodies he has buried in his basement. Old man Levitt is the town serial killer who dispatches door to door salesmen. (Something we all wish we could do.)

They lock up Mr. Levitt in the town jail cell, but with no judge coming from the city, what with all the zombies and it being the end of the world, they decide to let Mr. Levitt do what he does best...only against zombies of course.

But the problem with letting a serial killer only kill the already dead is the same problem you encounter with a man who masterbates, it may give him temporary relief, but it is not the same as sex.

How will old man Levitt find release? The kind that only a serial killer would enjoy.

How will the end of the world effect the nice townspeople of Lake Woebegotten and what other secrets and fetishes are they hiding from each other?

What will the children find in the baby cradle of baby jesus during the christmas play, and who put it there?

You will have to read this hilarious, sweet, and gorey zombie story to find out.

THE ZOMBIES OF LAKE WOEBEGOTTEN is available through www.nightshadebooks.com and www.amazon.com .

Thanks for reading, and till my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes

jbe.zombieblog@yahoo.com

A stunningly shot horror fantasy
announcing the arrival of the Ford Brothers on the global genre scene, THE
DEAD is as much an emotional journey through terror terrain as it is a
physically demanding and beautiful-looking one. Shot in life-threatening,
never-before-seen locations in Burkina Faso, French-speaking West Africa,
and Ghana, including the Sahara Desert, on 35mm film by the award-winning
Ford Brothers, THE DEAD is the ultimate Living Dead movie.

American Air Force engineer Lieutenant Brian Murphy (ROB FREEMAN)
survives a plane crash and runs the gauntlet across Africa, battling with the
living dead. Joining forces with local military man Sergeant Daniel Dembele
(PRINCE DAVID OSEI) who is desperately searching for his missing son
amongst the chaos, they must fight together if they are to survive the flesheating
horrors of the bush.

Indelible Productions and Latitude Films present THE DEAD starring Rob
Freeman (Saving Private Ryan, The X-Files, Smallville), Prince David Osei
(Pirate of the Night, The Dons in Sakawa, Kiss Me If You Can) and David
Dontoh (Welcome Home, No Time To Die). The highly anticipated horror
chiller is written and directed by Howard J Ford and Jon Ford (Mainline Run,
Distant Shadow). Produced by Howard J Ford, executive producer is Amir
Moallemi and the director of photography is Jon Ford. Music is by Imran
Ahmad (The Greenwich Village Massacre, In His Shoes, Mayomi, The
Foundation), special and visual effects by Dan Rickard with special make-up
effects by Max Van De Banks (Whatever Happened To Pete Blaggit?, Born of
Hope).

THE DEAD SYNOPSIS

When the last evacuation flight out of war-torn Africa crashes off the coast,
American Air Force Engineer Lieutenant Brian Murphy (ROB FREEMAN)
emerges as the sole survivor in a land where the dead are returning to life and
attacking the living.

On the run in a hostile and inhospitable parched landscape, where sudden
death lurks around every sun-burnished corner, Murphy has to use his wits
and ingenuity if he is to get home alive to his family.

When Murphy’s path clashes with that of Sergeant Daniel Dembele
(PRINCE DAVID OSEI), whose village has been torn apart by the reanimated
dead and now desperately searches for his son, they reluctantly join forces.
Two desperate men from two very different cultures fighting together side by
side to survive across the incredible vistas of Africa as the world succumbs to
the deadliest of viruses.

THE DEAD PRODUCTION NOTES

DAWN OF THE DEAD

Known in the United Kingdom as the new Ridley and Tony Scott because of
their similar backgrounds in directing numerous commercials for high profile
companies such as Nestle, Guinness, Unilever and Proctor & Gamble, the
road to THE DEAD began for Howard J Ford and his brother Jon Ford when
they were teenagers. “We used to watch a lot of horror movies”, recalls
Howard J Ford. “George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, Lucio Fulci’s Zombie
Flesheaters and Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead were instant favourites the moment
we saw them in quick succession. They had an incredible impact on us. We
watched Dawn of the Dead in a little room above our local fish and chip shop
and I remember that unnerving feeling on the way home afterwards. Every
corner, every back alley became every possible place where a zombie was
bound to loom out and tear at our flesh! Every person on the street was
suddenly going to lurch and grab us. Terrifying, yet somehow intensely
exciting”.

Jon Ford continues, “We were so hooked on the horror genre, my brother and
I would walk miles almost every day just to stand outside the cinema to look at
the poster for Zombie Flesheaters. We were too young to get in to actually
see it so instead we would loiter there for hours studying that image of the
dead rising out of the ground and approaching New York. I became like an
encyclopaedia of horror movies even collecting the entire Video Nasty
‘banned list’ that was causing a moral panic in the UK at the time. But there
was something about zombies that got to our very core and it never left us. It
was around this time we started making short films on Super 8mm film using
friends as actors and learning techniques as we went along. However it was
always our goal to make the ultimate Zombie Movie”.

Twenty years later the Ford Brothers still hadn’t made “that ultimate Zombie
Movie”. But they had made many short films, two features – Mainline Run
(1994) and Distant Shadow (1999) - and loads of successful, award-winning,
commercials for such agencies as Saatchi and Saatchi and Lowe Lintas
Worldwide. “As successful as we became in the industry”, remarks Howard J
Ford, “With large corporations like Guinness and Unilever coming to us to
make their adverts beautiful, we never got round to satisfying our urge to
make a horror movie. The opportunity had never arisen, we never really had
the proper resources behind us and, frankly, we didn’t want to add to the
stacks of seemingly endless rip-off crap that had since been churned out
following the George Romero classics”.

It was while the Ford Brothers were on a particularly gruelling commercial
shoot that they were haunted by the spectre of missed opportunity. “It just hit
us that what we’d been doing was totally not us”, recalls Howard J Ford. “And
at that point we were just doing it for the money. In our minds we felt we had
kind of sold out, which of course we said we would never do. Jon then
reminded me on that shoot about making the zombie movie we never got
round to make, and the rest is history”. Jon Ford adds, “Howard had directed
and I had been director of photography on commercial after commercial for the
last few years. We’d done adverts for almost every kind of product you could
think of and finally were making a good living.

Could we really risk all of that and go off and make the zombie
film we fantasized about as teenagers? Absolutely! Life is all about taking
risks, even though when we started out devising THE DEAD we had little idea
of how truly risky it was going to be”

The Ford Brothers credit their work travels as the main inspiration for
choosing Africa as the location for THE DEAD. It was while shooting several
commercials on the continent, they began to realize the appeal of the littleused
landscape in order to offer something fresh to the zombie genre. “We
wanted THE DEAD to look completely different to other zombie movies”,
points out Howard J Ford, “And while doing that, THE DEAD developed into a
zombie road film set in Africa. THE DEAD had to be a journey for the
audience, and rural West Africa was perfect for that. We wanted to make a
beautiful horror movie, despite the horrific situation we place the characters in,
yet there are still stunning vistas and spectacular scenery to be seen because
the landscape doesn’t change.

It seemed like most other zombie movies were set in Los Angeles, New York, London.
Very familiar locations that you might be able to see every day when you switch on
your TV or go to the cinema. So Africa was the catalyst, the hook and of course
stories of zombies originated in the West African spiritual belief system of voodoo,
which told of the people being controlled as labourers by a powerful wizard, before
being appropriated by the movie industry”. He continues, “Not only that but we
decided to take it even further and shoot the movie with a respect the zombie genre
hasn’t seen for decades. We would shoot on 35mm film and treat the project with the
care and detailing it deserved. Plus the characters in zombie films always ended hauled up
in some building somewhere, whereas we wanted to try and give audiences
something fresh and have our story unfold moment-by-moment in constantly
changing locations. We wanted to take our audience on the ride with our main
character in his epic journey across a lush continent still very few people have
visited or know much about”.

It’s not just the unique West African backdrops of Burkina Faso, Ghana and
the Sahara Desert that makes THE DEAD such a remarkable film either. The
Ford Brothers knew that they had to develop a compelling lead character,
another crucial part of the equation in creating a provocative, inventive and
unique horror chiller. “At the core of THE DEAD is the idea of our main
character being a fish out of water, one ordinary guy stuck in extraordinary
circumstances,” clarifies Howard J Ford. “In writing the script Jon and I
worked hard to avoid every zombie cliché. We didn’t want our lead to be a
heroic character either, but flawed and prone to making the sort of mistakes
we all would in such a terrifying situation. There’s always a game plan until
something goes wrong. Being surrounded by hordes of zombies and no real
sensible explanation makes our hero feel impotent and useless. So THE
DEAD is as much of an emotional journey as it is a physical journey for our
lead. It may sound odd considering the living dead context but the reaction
Jon and I strived for in the plot is a deep emotional connection and an in-yourface
impact the audience wouldn’t forget”.

THE DEAD also had to feature slow-moving zombies states Howard J Ford
emphatically. “Jon and I agreed on that rule before we even put pen to paper
on the script. This is not just because this is how our inspirations did it, but I
also believe you lose something fundamental with these so-called ‘running
zombies’: when an attacker is moving fast, the scene has no choice but to
become an action scene and when you are shooting action, you lose
suspense and suspense is ultimately more powerful. Setting THE DEAD in an
open land where you cannot hide and you also cannot keep going and going
as you are short of food and water and at some point you have to sleep or
rest, no matter how slow something is, if there are enough of them, they will
eventually catch up with you and eat you. And that concept in itself is a scary
thing”.

ARMY OF THE DEAD

To play the lead role of American Air Force engineer Lieutenant Brian
Murphy, the Ford Brothers needed an actor with steely authority, someone
with a commanding presence and a raw physicality. “And into our lives
rollerbladed vegan Canadian performer Rob Freeman”, laughs Howard J
Ford. “Rob just had the look, you felt he could be this technical wiz, but who
could also take care of himself. I knew instantly we had landed a fantastic
headline actor. Murphy was such a physically demanding role only a few
people on this planet could have coped with how traumatic and difficult it was
going to be and Rob was one of the fittest guys I’ve ever met”.

“I was in-line skating the cities of Europe after being in three TV episodes of
Smallville as Superman’s coach”, reveals Rob Freeman, who also appeared
in the television series The Outer Limits, The X-Files and the movies Saving
Private Ryan and The Russia House. “And I ended up in Brighton, on the
south coast of England, to meet with a producer. While in that seaside town I
also met someone who knew Howard and Jon and when we were introduced
they said, ‘Hey, we have this script, would you read it?’ I said, ‘Sure, send it
over’. But they insisted I had to come to their house because of script security
issues. So I went over to their place for a nice afternoon tea and I read it on
the patio. I loved it. ‘Want to audition?’ they said. ‘OK, what date, what time?’ I
said. ‘Now’ came back the surprising reply and they set up a camera in their
living room and we were away. Not exactly the process I’m used to but then
nothing about THE DEAD was usual”.

Freeman continues, “I didn’t just read the script, I talked to the Fords and
asked a million questions. I found out that these guys had worked in factories
in their youth and, instead of going out partying and drinking, had saved their
money and invested it in their own camera equipment and learned how to
make movies from the bottom up. They learned all about directing, lighting
and editing and through sheer hard work became the names in the
commercials industry they are today. I sparked to their passion about wanting
to make a classic living dead movie. I knew if I was ever going to have a shot
at making a classic movie it was going to be with these guys. They just had
that old fashioned tenacity and craft that I knew would make a thrilling feature.
So I joined them for what proved to be an adventure beyond our wildest
imaginations and duress”.

For the role of the local military man, Sergeant Daniel Dembele, who
reluctantly joins Murphy on his survival quest, Jon Ford says, “We were
looking for a particular type of African character, one who has had a hard-life
but is shrewd and clever. Prince David Osei had that earthy, proud, worldlywise
demeanour about him and was a natural to play Demebele. We found
out after we had cast Prince David that he is known in the Ghanaian film
industry as ‘The Tom Cruise of West Africa’”.

Born in the Ashanti region of Ghana, Prince David Osei is a leading figure in
West African cinema. “I was interested in THE DEAD because Africa does not
have a horror movie tradition at all and I wanted to see what it would be like to
star in one. You only have the Nigerian Nollywood productions of 666 and The
Handkerchief 2 or such South African fare as Slash that are usually shot on
video or cheap looking. Clearly THE DEAD was going to be politically
relevant, detailed, epic, high spec – all the things that were important to me. I
was on a shortlist of five for the role, and I was the last person they auditioned
because Ghana was the final country they searched. It was when reading a
portion of the script that I became more inspired by the project and really
wanted to be a part of it. I was so delighted when Howard called me to say I
had won the role”.

“I remember precisely the moment I met Prince David Osei”, recalls Rob
Freeman. “First off I was knocked out by his physicality and beautiful silky
voice. He is one very handsome man. I’ve watched him walk into a room and
become the immediate centre of attention just because of his sheer presence
and charisma. He was a great choice for Dembele. While filming we went
through exactly the same experiences because, even though he’s famous in
West Africa, he was being threatened and intimidated like the rest of us. That
drew us together, and the chemistry you see on camera is real, no doubt
about that. Every scene was a struggle, just to get it set up and shot was so
emotionally draining. So by that time, what you see on screen was our real
emotional responses. I love Prince, he helped me through this film, and I’d like
to think I helped him too”.

Prince David Osei adds, “Rob was like a father to me and our on and off
screen relationship was based on mutual respect. Rob helped me so much,
with dialogue, with tips on how to get the best out of every scene. Rob told me
how to move, slow down, turn, and I found my rhythm thanks to him. I am
famous in West Africa, but THE DEAD was something entirely new for me. It
was important at this time in my career to work with such a professional UK
based operation. These sorts of films never come to my part of Africa and
certainly not on a silver platter like this one did. I think working with Howard
and Jon has helped me make a major step forward in my acting career”.

DAY OF THE DEAD

Howard J Ford distinctly remembers the day he looked at THE DEAD two month
shooting schedule thinking, “A zombie road-movie set in French
speaking West Africa by British filmmakers, with an American lead played by
a vegan Canadian and also starring the Tom Cruise of Ghana. Well, it looks a
little problematic on paper but it wouldn’t be that bad would it? Surely, with a
bit of luck on our side we’d have ourselves an adventure to tell our kids about
and a unique living dead movie to boot”.

The Fords ended up shooting in Burkina Faso because it seemed to represent
the most beautiful but largely unseen aspects of rural Africa. Howard J Ford
continues, “But most people we spoke to hadn’t even heard of the country!
We went on our own road trip for thousands of miles starting on the coast in
Ghana and ending up in the Sahara Desert. We wanted to show our
audiences locations that had literally never been seen by anyone from the
western world and in fact some of the villages we filmed in, foreigners, let
alone cameras had literally never been before. Not only that, nearly all the
guns and military equipment we used were genuine African army, fresh from a
civil war in nearby Sierra Leone”.

Actor Rob Freeman adds, “THE DEAD looks so unique and stunning because
it’s a testament to the Ford Brothers refined sense of style and work ethos. It
was made on the fly without hordes of grips, gaffers or helpers and they did it
all themselves with a skeleton crew. It’s their professional expertise and canny
relationship that made it work as well as it did under such hellish conditions”.
So how does the Ford Brothers co-directing dynamic work exactly? Jon Ford
declares, “Because we’ve done so much together now, we have a shorthand,
an intuition, all we’d have to do is give a look or say a word and each of us
knew what we had to do. There were moments on THE DEAD where three
pages worth of dialogue had to be ripped out of the script to save time. But
we never discussed those issues in depth because we had to make
instantaneous decisions. Yet both of us knew exactly when that was. Do we
ever get angry at each other? Of course, but my rage is a right angle chart. I
go from Zen calmness to flashing anger in seconds. Then it’s over so fast it
seems like it never happened. Howard is much more on an even keel”.

“Jon is very technically minded”, adds Howard J Ford, “Which is something
I’m not at all. For a long time half of our equipment was held at customs in
Africa during shooting so we were missing essential things like batteries for
the camera. Suddenly Jon would appear with batteries he’d made from
scratch himself. I still have no idea how he did it, but he made it all work. I
think our precise teamwork is the reason we’ve had such a long career. We’ve
never been to film school so we’ve literally been learning from our mistakes
together for the past two decades. As professionals, we work well together
because we don’t have to waste too much time in explaining things to each
other. We just simply get each other”.

Part of what makes THE DEAD so special is that it feels real with real
locations, shot with real natives, with real backdrops. “There is something to
be said for that kind of filmmaking”, voices Jon Ford. “Keeping the movie
grounded in the reality of its location the entire time hopefully makes
audiences feel like the events depicted could actually happen. If we went to a
sound stage, it would have defeated the purpose of setting the story in Africa,
and I don’t think we would have made a quality movie. We included real
people in real villages – showing the suffering, the human consequences of a
zombie outbreak rather than just concentrating on straight action pieces. We
really wanted to ground the film in the ‘real world’ as much as possible so the
emotional aspects would have as much power as possible. We wanted World
Cinema to meet the Zombie genre in one innovative close encounter”.
Howard J Ford adds, “We didn’t want to falter far from the path of realism –
once you’re past the idea of the dead coming back to life everything had to
feel real – no guns with everlasting bullets or characters diving through the air
firing double hand guns just to get some style - certainly not wearing long
coats or dark glasses in slow-motion! All that stuff we find cheesy and
unrealistic and as a result takes you out of reality. We also didn’t want to
have 500 year old zombies coming back from the dead as we felt the brain
and muscle tissue would be too decomposed and however much we love the
look, it was stretching believability just a bit too far - the more recent dead
returning to life seemed the logical approach”.

Special zombie make-up effects were handled by Max Van De Banks who
has worked on numerous film and television productions in the UK and across
Europe. “They were absolutely astonishing and seamless”, says Jon Ford
with pride. “Although we can’t take credit for them we did muck in when we
could. We wanted as many physical effects as possible and always erred on
the side of a practical effect because we needed something for the actors to
work with. They needed the visuals to act against. Dan Rickard even devised
a blood splatter device made out of plumbing implements when squibs
couldn’t provide the answer. The zombie at the beginning with the dodgy leg
was real and he could twist it right back so it looked like it was going to snap.
We paid him the equivalent of three months pay for a 12-hour day. Which
caused problems because we had to stop him from smiling with happiness
during the takes. No, you are meant to be nasty!”

“We were filming in villages that had real people suffering various kinds of
illnesses, maiming and poverty”, observes Howard J Ford. “They didn’t have
anything like electricity, or much of anything at all, so we considered it our
duty to use a lot of these villagers as extras and gofers. I don’t think there has
ever been a genre film that had those kinds of realities mixed in, the suffering
of villagers and the surrealism of zombies. There is one scene that is very
disturbing, where villagers are casually tossing bodies onto a fire and you can
see limbs on the ground and burning corpses. We shot that footage in a gritty
documentary style so it would remind people of African newsreel footage and
incorporate the power of the harsh realities we have witnessed in the past”.
Rob Freeman though found it an amazing experience living with the natives in
their mud huts as he recalls. “There was no running water, no toilets – you
had to go out and dig a hole – and we’d be working out to keep fit at night. Yet
we were under the skies and the stars in them were unlike anything I’ve ever
seen, it was just transcendent sitting there. You had just returned from a
frustrating entire day’s shoot, having no food or drink for eight hours, in
searing heat. But you looked up to see this stunning sight, like diamonds on
black velvet, so still, not a sound, a magical moment”.

More down to earth Howard J Ford vividly remembers filming in one of the
mud huts where cockroaches were crawling up his legs continuously. “There
were pots around the sides of the huts, and I was told that no matter what, I
could not touch them because they contained the remains of their dead
relatives. Death was around us all the time – the villagers would even
slaughter an animal in our honour every day, a sacrifice for their good fortune
- which is why I feel THE DEAD is such an apt title for our movie”.

The Ford Brothers also experienced a case of life imitating art when they met
a cannibal at one remote village. Howard J Ford recalls with a smile, “He told
us how they eat people but only if they are already dead and not
decomposed. He stopped by the set and watched our white-eyed Zombies
pretending to eat human flesh and loved it! I remembered seeing this cannibal
laughing with our translator as he eyed the crew and it turned out he was
commenting that he’d quite like to try some ‘white meat’ if he got the chanceM
It was getting dark at this point and we were in the middle of nowhere. It was
an ominous and uneasy feeling... That’s when I knew it was time to leave!”

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD

While it was a tough and demanding shoot for every single minute of the
entire eight-week production period, THE DEAD actually turned out to be by
far the most horrific experience a cast and crew should ever have to endure.
Howard J Ford remarks, “If I had known the extent of how truly life threatening
it would be on a day-to-day basis – how much real death we would encounter,
how sick we would become, that we would face knives, guns, constant
corruption, even near death from malaria - if I had truly known how shocking
the situations we would find ourselves in and how many of us would come so
close to our own deaths during the shoot, perhaps THE DEAD would never
have existed”.

Jon Ford continues, “No one will ever know how tough it was to shoot THE
DEAD. It took 5 weeks just to get our equipment into the country even after
the whole cast and crew had arrived. We were constantly stopped by armed
police for money and held up by so many things you could never plan for.
Sometimes we literally would not make it to the location for the shoot because
we would be stopped at gunpoint often with our vehicles and equipment being
impounded until sufficient cash was handed over. There were times when it
felt like we could not get a single shot in the can yet we were being exposed
to stress levels way beyond the norm”.

Howard J Ford adds, “I was mugged at knife-point on the first day and all my
money, credit cards, driving license – everything - was taken from me. Then I
was nearly put in jail for driving without the license that had been stolen! It
became clear that to the local police we looked like a moving cash machine
with our cast/crew/equipment/generator etc. There were even articles in the
local newspapers that mistakenly reported Hollywood had arrived, focusing
undue attention on everything we did. There were times where we couldn’t get
cash into the country fast enough. What’s sad is that this wasn’t money
towards the production - it was more so we could fill up brown envelopes with
money just to stay out of jail”.

Every now and again actor Prince David Osei’s local fame would save the day
and get the filmmakers out of tight spots though. “Once we were stopped by
the police in Ghana”, recollects Jon Ford, “But the moment they glanced
Prince David in the back seat, their faces lit up with excitement as they asked
him for autographs. However the further we got away from Ghana the less
recognition there was and the more threatening the situations became”.
On top of all this when the Ford Brothers finally got to start shooting, lead
actor Rob Freeman collapsed with full blown malaria and very nearly died.
“He was such a tough guy and a fitness fanatic even, but this little malaria bug
put him in hospital on a drip for a total of two weeks... One day he collapsed
on set and started convulsing. The doctor said he had to be treated
immediately or he would be dead within three days. He was meant to be in
every scene so you can imagine how restricting it was and what it did to our
already tight schedule”.

Soon everyone on the crew started dropping like flies. “Not surprising
considering some of the remote locations we had to film in”, points out
Howard J Ford. “Jon and I would sometimes discuss shots and camera
angles in between bouts of projectile vomiting! I’m actually someone who
prides myself on sticking to schedules and budgets, but we had to throw away
those ideals on THE DEAD. Every day we had to figure out who would be
available since someone had a fever, someone had typhoid and someone
was being treated for malaria. Being the writer/producer/director, everything
sort of fell on me, and it was a very difficult time because I had to deliver the
film. To be honest, we all just kept moving forward because everyone wanted
to get the hell out of Africa as soon as we could”.

“From the actors point of view it was all rather exciting”, says Prince David
Osei offering a different view. “Many scenes had to be shortened because of
all the production difficulties and Rob and I would often end up improvising a
lot of our dialogue. I enjoyed that immensely as much as I could see Howard
and Jon tearing their hair out. At the end of the day, many of the scenes were
the result of what we could get right at that moment in time, no messing. What
we could cobble together to make it work the best, adversity being the mother
of invention. It was a credit to everyone we all pulled in the same direction and
it all worked out”.

“When I commit to something, I commit to it unconditionally so leaving was
never an option,” volunteers Howard J Ford. “Throughout the myriad problems
I was just focused on getting THE DEAD finished, and I had to be reminded
more often than I’d like to recall that people’s lives were at stake, including my
own. But we didn’t have the money to just go and finish the movie on a
comfortable sound stage. We wanted THE DEAD to be hyper realistic and not
just another bland CGI movie with obvious green screen backdrops”.

SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD

Even though the Ford Brothers describe filming in Africa as ‘Hell on Earth,’
they had no intention of leaving the continent without completing production
there. “I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to just go home”, says Jon
Ford. “But Howard would always talk me out of it and I’m glad he did. I lost
two stones in weight and I really didn’t have it to lose to start with. We took
loads of pictures on location of course but we were too scared to show them
to our parents because we knew they would worry about how thin we looked.
Now, from a distance looking back, I have no real regrets, just amazing and
vivid memories”.

“I actually do regret one thing”, remarks Howard J Ford. “That we didn’t
appreciate what we were doing when it was all happening, but that’s human
nature. I can’t possibly do justice to how it truly felt to go through what we did
to make THE DEAD. I cannot get across with words the heat, the smells, the
feeling of the dust in your lungs day after day, the stickiness, the unrelenting
flies in your face. How it felt to endure the stresses and at the same time
feeling so ill and weak and that constant feeling the entire team had that we
simply might not get out of this place alive. One thing I’ve learned is that you
can’t control filmmaking at all, whether you are in Africa or your own backyard.
I think we did incredibly well under the very trying circumstances”.
“Yes, the circumstances were awful”, points out Rob Freeman. “But what I
remember the most from the whole crazy, surreal trip was the meal we
cooked ourselves on the edge of the Sahara. We didn’t have much food left,
and we still weren’t sure if we were ever going to get out of Africa in one
piece, but it was our last supper. We had reached that point in filming THE
DEAD where we had totally bonded as a unit. And we were okay with
whatever was going to happen. We relaxed at that moment, what else could
we do, and I can recall an incredible rush of peacefulness. I’ll never forget that
moment, ever”.

“I just hope that what we went through and have produced has resulted in a
wonderful film that can take audiences on a journey they haven’t been on
before”, concludes Howard J Ford. “Entertain them for an hour or two of their
lives in ways they might not expect from the genre, whether they are horror
fans or not. I sincerely hope we have achieved something unique with THE
DEAD”.

CAST BIOGRAPHIES

ROB FREEMAN - Lieutenant Brian Murphy
Rob is an extremely talented actor and has featured in some of the highest
grossing movies of all time including Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan.
He has also had major roles in numerous international TV series such as
Smallville, The Outer Limits and The X-Files. Rob totally immersed himself in
the role of battered flight engineer Lieutenant Brian Murphy, resulting in a
remarkable performance that will captivate audiences around the world.

PRINCE DAVID OSEI – Sergeant Daniel Dembele
Prince David is one of Africa's most exciting young actors and already a huge
star in West Africa. Well known for his lead roles in many successful African
movies including Pirate of the Night, The Dons in Sakawa and Kiss Me If You
Can, THE DEAD is a great opportunity for the rest of the world to see this
incredibly talented and charismatic actor at work in his first major role in an
international production. His latst movie release in Africa is I Sing Of A Well.

DAVID DONTOH – The Chief
David has enjoyed a successful career spanning over thirty years. The Ghanaian
veteran recently completed Warrior Queen and Penicillin and is widely
regarded as one of Africa's finest actors. His talent comes to light in his
mesmerising role as The Chief, struggling to protect his crumbling village in

THE DEAD.

CREW BIOGRAPHIES

HOWARD J FORD - Director/Producer

THE DEAD is the third feature film from award-winning director Howard J
Ford, who started making short films at the age of 13 and directed his first
feature film Mainline Run aged just 21. Following his second feature film, the
stylish crime thriller Distant Shadow, Howard’s visionary talents have been
further honed whilst directing well over 100 commercials for many high profile
international clients including Guinness, Nestle, Unilever, Proctor & Gamble,
for agencies such as Saatchi & Saatchi & Lowe Lintas Worldwide.

JON FORD - Cinematographer and Co-Director.
Jon is an incredibly talented director of photography with four feature films
and over 100 commercials under his belt. His attention to detail has been at
the forefront of every element on THE DEAD including the initial concept. His
outstanding eye for detail has enabled him to photograph perfectly the
stunning scenery of Africa and give the zombie road movie an awe inspiring
cinematic look.

AMIR S MOALLEMI - Executive Producer
Amir is a qualified accountant who has been involved in the entertainment
industry for over ten years advising clients on all areas of business and tax
dealings. He has specialist knowledge in complex tax structures for film and
television. As well as his strong commercial background, Amir has a real
passion for the artistic side of film making and has often been referred to as
one of a few executives who bridge the business and artistic areas of film
production successfully.

END

video diary part 1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7m_zl1qSdo

video diary part 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-mT8zSG6bo

video diary part 3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrFCSwFl0TM

film trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANpgVWVvpjs

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, i will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes

Greeting my shambling, shuffling friends!

I wanted to tell you about a true gem of a zombie novel.

Pariah By Bob Fingerman

I am an instant fan of the writing and imagination of Bob Fingerman. (Coincidently in 8th grade I was nicknamed fingerman, but I wont go into that, giggity giggity goo.)

Pariah begins with a man committing suicide in front of his wife by leaning out a window seal and plunging a couple stories below, lying there conscious and broken the zombies consume him, leaving behind only clean bones atop a bloody smear. The situation is deteriorating for the people who have boarded themselves into an apartment building. Rationing their food into smaller and smaller portions, they are all beginning to appear emaciated. Their personalities are even toned down in their weakened condition.

Then she appears, a teenage girl with a hello kitty backpack and earphones listening to music as she walks through the hordes that shuffle through the streets hungry. The dead part the way for her in the form of a huge circle, like Moses parting the red sea, even making moans of disgust at her presence.

Getting her attention they convince her to bring them food from the grocery store across the street, that before her arrival teased at being out of their reach so long as the dead shambled through the streets. Convincing her to stay, she starts making daily trips restocking their supplies completely unmolested by the streets full of zombies.

As their health begins to improve, and their bodies get stronger, this allows their true personalities and the associated conflicts to come out with it. Then the classic claustrophobia of mixing so many different people together in a finite space begins to build up the story and its plot.

I am going to leave the rest out, you have to buy the book to learn what happens, and how she walks amongst the dead without worry.

Bob Fingerman truly knows how to make a character realistic, to make you care for or hate them.

As a result of this book, I am now looking into more works by Bob Fingerman, like Bottom feeders, and Recess Pieces (an illustrated zombie story of kids battling the undead at their school).

If you have read Pariah or any other works by Bob Fingerman, feel free to share your opinions in the comments below.

You can find Pariah, new or used at amazon.com.

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes

Greeting my shambling shuffling friends!

Once again Permuted Press has turned out a great zombie novel.

Domain of the Dead

This story only runs 185 pages so it is a fast read, but the visuals made it seem like I was watching a zombie movie in my head.

The story starts off with a girl about to commit suicide off the rooftop of the warehouse she and other survivors are trapped in, surrounded by a mass of the living dead, right before taking the plunge she notices a helicopter, the first signs of life they have seen in a long time.

Running low on food after years in the warehouse, the last of the survivors decide to make a run for the chopper, half of the group never makes it, but a sexy eastern european sniper with a hot accent helps clear a path for the rest as they rush to safety pursed by Whiskey Deltas...military speak for W.D. or walking dead.

The helicopter takes them to a research ship, where they learn of the fate of the rest of the world and the steps humanity has taken to survive and come back from the brink of extinction.

The purpose of the research ship is to try to study and find a cure or vaccine against the virus that causes the dead to walk, and just in case they accidentally mutate the virus and it goes airborn, they have to radio in to a nuclear submarine every 8 hours, missing the 8 hour deadline results in instant nuclear cremation for the entire ship and the surrounding seas.

You got to get the book to see where it goes from there.

What is different about this zombie story is that, all it takes is a scratch from a zombies hand that breaks the skin to become infected, so people have to be extra careful at all times or face becoming a Whiskey Delta...

I truly recommend you reading this book, the action is fast, and the plot and build up are great.

Domain of the dead will proudly sit on my bookshelf next to my other zombie novels, half of which comes from Permuted Press.

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.

Jimmy Blue Eyes
